Your visits from the specialist doctor in IP are very important. You'll want to make the most of the time you have available during these meetings, especially if you've had a long journey to get there. If you have to take a lot of tests, remember to give the doctors all the information they need to help you. Informal for example of any new symptom: how and when it started, how is changing your sleep, breathing, daily activities, appetite, your family life and work, etc. Remember that the medical team is on your side and is not there to judge you. If you feel too embarrassed to talk about your problems, write down the details on a sheet and ask your doctor to read them first. If doctors use too much technical language and you have difficulty understanding them you have to do this, and ask them for explanations. If you suggest to do some tests ask to explain why; If you prescribe medications, be aware of their possible risks and side effects.

Good advice that will allow you to get the most out of your visits

  • Make a list of questions and problems that you would like to discuss
  • Paper and pen holder in order to write down the important facts
  • Wear loose clothing that will facilitate examination by your doctor 
  • Inform your doctor about any medication you're taking 
  • Get accompanied by a family member or a friend if you want to feel more comfortable.

During the visit: 

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions
  • If you don't understand, ask doctors to repeat, explain, and take notes
  • If you prescribe a drug, make sure you understand the reason, duration of treatment, etc.
  • Be frank. If you have a problem that you find awkward or difficult, talk about it right away. Remember that your problem is probably very common for doctors, who are there to help you.
  • If you are asked for further inquiries, get informed about where to take these tests, ask the name of a contact person and/or the department's phone number.
  • Don't be afraid to confess "how you really feel," after all, only you know exactly how you feel. You can spend a lot of time between appointments with your team of reference specialists, and during these visits there may be many things to talk about. If you arrive punctually and well prepared for these visits, you can maximize the time of the interview. If you have a diary where you explain your symptoms and/or your therapy, where you describe your health both mental and physical, specific symptoms, possible reactions to treatments and problems encountered, take it to visit. This will allow you to not forget or confuse problems, and it is certainly very useful for you and your medical group. Remember that you can always contact someone from your team of specialists in IP, even outside the clinical visit: Make sure you have their phone numbers, even that of the specialized nurse.

What happens if things don't go the right way, how to claim

We all know that, despite the best efforts and goodwill, things do not always go the right way. This is about any aspect of our lives. In the medical field, as in most situations, it is better to strive to deal with problems when they arise, and act fast. There are established procedures for patients who have doubts or complaints about any aspect of their therapy. We advise you, first of all, to discuss your concerns with specialists: doctors, nurses, clinic/hospital directors to see if you can find a solution to your problems. In your hospital there is, surely, a structure that has the task of understanding and accepting the problems and complaints of the sick (normally called office relations with the public-address).
